Brainy Smurf is the village know-it-all: the only classic Smurf in glasses, forever raising a finger to repeat what Papa Smurf always says, and forever being launched over the fence for it. Peyo named him Schtroumpf à Lunettes, the Smurf with glasses; early albums also called him the Moralizing Smurf. Brainy was among the five Smurfs Schleich cast in 1969, his first figure went through more glasses and marking changes than almost any other pose, and the book-holding versions that followed are the ones buyers mix up. Why does Brainy Smurf wear glasses, and why do the others throw him out?

The glasses came before the personality. The Smurfs Wiki traces them to the 1961 Belgian TV shorts, before Peyo drew them into the album The Black Smurfs, and the cartoon episode Papa's Family Album shows Papa Smurf fitting a near-blind young Brainy with spectacles. What makes him insufferable is the sermonizing: he opens with what Papa Smurf always says, closes with a threat to tell Papa Smurf, and from the third Hanna-Barbera season presses his own Quotations of Brainy Smurf on anyone who will hold still. The village's answer is the franchise's longest-running gag. In the comics an annoyed Smurf, often Hefty, steps off-panel and a loud whack follows; the cartoon swapped the mallet for a boot over the village fence.

How different is Brainy in the comics, the 1981 cartoon, and the movies?

Three Brainys exist, and toy makers have copied all three. The comic Brainy is a bossy deputy; in King Smurf he expects to be elected leader and collects two votes, his own and Dopey's. The Hanna-Barbera Brainy starts as that bookworm, becomes Papa Smurf's lab assistant, and grows less competent season by season. The film Brainy is a tinkerer: in the 2011 movie he works the spell that turns the moon blue and reopens the portal to New York, in The Smurfs 2 he loses his place on the Paris rescue when Clumsy scatters the crystals, and Smurfs: The Lost Village makes him a former Smurf Scout feuding with Hefty. The 2021 series adds his smurfway scooter; the 2025 Paramount musical sends him to Paris with No Name.

Which actors have given Brainy Smurf his voice?

Danny Goldman played him for the whole NBC run, September 1981 to December 1989. Fred Armisen took the part in Sony's The Smurfs (July 2011) and The Smurfs 2 (July 2013). Danny Pudi voiced him in Smurfs: The Lost Village, released in April 2017. Youssef El Kaouakibi is the English voice of the 2021 series, with Antoine Schoumsky in the French original. Xolo Maridueña voices him in Smurfs, the Paramount Animation film that opened in US theaters on July 18, 2025.

Is Clumsy really Brainy's best friend, and does Brainy have a girlfriend?

Only in one version. The Smurfs Wiki is explicit that the 1981 series is the sole Smurfs production in which Brainy and Clumsy are best friends; in the 2021 series Clumsy is among the Smurfs who call him annoying. In The Dark-Ness Monster a glasses-less Brainy admits he trusts Clumsy with his life. Romance is thinner still. Brainy is one of the few villagers who does not chase Smurfette. The 2021 series pairs him with Smurfblossom, whom Wikipedia's character list calls his love interest and who earns a kiss for repairing his smurfway. Nothing in the comics or the films gives him a partner.

The 1969 Schleich Brainy: one of the first PVC Smurfs ever made

Schleich opened its PVC line in 1965 with three figures, added three in 1966, and in 1969 released five more: Moon, Winter, Brainy, Guitar and Papa Smurf. That Brainy is Schleich number 20006, and the Blue Imps variant guide dates its production to 1969 through 1973 and again from 1975 to 1984. The oldest have black glasses and the word Peyo molded on the arm with bare feet; a Schleich emblem joins the arm next, then W. Germany appears underneath. West German production moved to red glasses, then to yellow glasses with a yellow paint dot, one version with the head tilted sideways. Hong Kong castings dated 1969 have black or red glasses and a deeper blue skin, some also stamped W. Berrie & Co, and a Portuguese run has red glasses and a yellow dot.

Brainy with a book: the 1977 Bookworm and the later Schleich poses

The figure most people call Brainy with a book is Schleich 20094, listed as Bookworm Smurf and first issued in 1977, with production recorded to 1986 and again from 1992 to 2000. Its variants turn on the book. West German copies marked Bully hold a bright red and yellow book; a white-book example exists, but the guide will not vouch for it. Hong Kong figures dated 1983 carry a darker red and yellow book, and reissues stamped Made in China or Made in Germany with a CE mark and the 1977 date fool buyers into thinking they own a 1970s original. Schleich recut the classic Brainy as 20536 in 2005. The Coleka collector database then lists Brainy with book 20734 and Jungle Brainy 20778 (2016), Soccer Referee 20809 (2018), a plain Brainy 20812, and Brainy Smurfway on his scooter, 20834 (2022). No Brainy appears in the Blue Imps Super Smurf lists.

Movie-era Brainy toys: Jakks Pacific, the 2025 plush, and the Funko Pops

Jakks Pacific held the toy license before, during and after the Sony films. For the 2011 movie Jakks issued the Grab 'Ems, roughly two-inch figures sold carded singly and in two-packs; a Brainy and Chef two-pack shows up only in secondhand listings, so treat it as collector report. A 10-inch Brainy plush followed in October 2011. For Smurfs: The Lost Village, Jakks announced a global line on February 15, 2017, with figures, playsets and bean-bag plush. Schmidt Spiele's January 2025 range for the new film includes a Brainy plush of about 28 cm and puzzles packed with collectible Brainy figures. Funko has made two Brainy Pops: Animation number 271 from 2017 and Asia number 208 from 2023, both now vaulted; the June 2024 wave left him out.

Reading a Brainy figure: glasses, book and country tell you the version

Brainy identification runs in a different order from most Smurfs, because the glasses and the book change before the stamp does. On the 1969 pose, black glasses point to the earliest West German or Hong Kong castings, red to mid-period West Germany, Hong Kong or Portugal, and yellow to later West German figures with a yellow dot. Peyo on the arm alone is the oldest state, deeper blue skin is a Hong Kong trait, and the yellow dot records painting in Portugal. On the Bookworm, bright versus dark red on the book separates European from Hong Kong copies, and a CE mark means a 1990s or later reissue whatever the molded date says. Judging by the Blue Imps guide, the scarce states are the arm-marked black-glasses Brainy and the doubtful white-book Bookworm; red-glasses and Portuguese figures are the common ones, and every post-2004 Schleich Brainy remains plentiful. UK readers should know Brainy fronted the 1978 National Benzole commercials, and that British promotional Smurfs of that period were often cast in Hong Kong.
