Hefty Smurf is the strongest Smurf in the village and the only one with a tattoo: a red heart with an arrow through it on his upper arm. Frank Welker voiced him in the 1981 cartoon, and he carried a crush on Smurfette through Smurfs: The Lost Village in 2017. Schleich sold a dumbbell-lifting Smurf from 1972 that fans still call Hefty, yet a figure wearing the heart did not reach the catalog until 1994. Below is the checked profile, then what the wikis skip: each Schleich, Jakks, McDonald's and Funko Hefty, and how the tattoo and the barbell separate the real Hefty from his look-alikes.

Why does Hefty Smurf have a tattoo, and which arm is it on?

No published source explains why Peyo gave him one; the sources do settle what it looks like and where it sits. The English Wikipedia character list describes a red heart with an arrow through it on his right arm, sometimes on both. The French list records the drift: right biceps in the comics, left arm in the films and books, both arms in parts of the cartoon. That is why Hefty Smurf tattoo images online disagree, and why the arm on a figure is no sign of a fake. On PVC the heart is a dab of red paint that play wears to a pink smudge, so a crisp heart lifts a loose example above a rubbed one.

Is Hefty Smurf in love with Smurfette?

In one film, yes. Wikipedia's entry for Smurfs: The Lost Village (2017) describes Hefty as a strong Smurf who annoys Brainy and has a crush on Smurfette, and he is visibly put out when she settles into Smurfy Grove. The comics give him a different tie to her: in Peyo's original Smurfette story, after Gargamel abandons his clay creation in the forest, Hefty is the Smurf who brings her to the village, and the 1981 cartoon kept that scene. The French Wikipedia list adds that comic-book Hefty shows off in front of her because he is reputed to be the strongest Smurf. No version writes them as a couple.

Frank Welker voiced Hefty on NBC from September 1981 to December 1989, doubling as Clockwork Smurf and Peewit. Gary Basaraba took the part in Sony's 2011 and 2013 films. Joe Manganiello played him in The Lost Village in April 2017. Vincent Broes voices Hefty and Chef in the English track of the 2021 CGI series, which Nickelodeon began airing in September 2021. For Hefty Smurf 2025, the answer is Alex Winter in Paramount's Smurfs, released in the US on July 18, 2025.

Did Schleich make a Hefty Smurf before 1994?

Not under that name. The figure most people mean is 20020, which Blue Buddies lists as the Barbell Gymnast Smurf from 1972: a Smurf hoisting a dumbbell in one hand, made in five shirt colors, yellow, green, red, white and bare-chested. The Australian site Smurfs.com.au points out that BP Australia's promotional material sold it as Keep Fit, and that Schleich produced no figure called Hefty until 1994. The larger Super Smurf 40507, a weightlifter pressing a barbell overhead, dates from 1980 in brown and red outfits. Neither wears a heart, and the shirt or outfit color is the variant worth noting.

Every Schleich figurine that is actually Hefty

Five regular figures, by catalog number. 20429 (1994) is the hands-on-hips Hefty with the red heart, which Smurfs.com.au records as made through 2000. 20468 Climber Smurf, stamped 1999, carries climbing gear and a tattoo, which is why Blue Buddies tags it as Hefty though the packaging never said so. 20737 Weightlifter Smurf, from the 2012 Olympic series, is a white-shirted Hefty straining under a barbell, stamped 2011. 2080B is the Lost Village Hefty of 2017, flexing one arm, marked 2016 and sold in the 20800 movie box set. 20811 is the Classic Smurfs II Hefty, stamped Peyo 2018 and released in 2019, also found in that box set and the six-figure 20802 set.

Jakks Pacific's Play Along Toys cartoon line of 2009 put Hefty Smurf with Weights in its second wave, a Hefty with a basket of apples in the Picnic Pack, and a Hefty and Clumsy pair inside the Windmill playset. The 2011 Movie Grab 'Ems, figures about two and three-quarter inches tall, paired Hefty with Handy in a two-pack from August 2011. For The Lost Village in February 2017, Jakks launched vehicle packs for Hefty, Clumsy and Smurflily, an eight-inch bean-bag Hefty Smurf plush, and a Hefty and Smurfstorm two-pack. Fast food added more: the 2011 McDonald's Happy Meal Hefty lifts a red dumbbell and is marked Peyo 2011, Made for McD's; and Burger King's 2017 Hefty rides a green surfboard.

Is there a Hefty Smurf Funko Pop?

One, and it never reached US shelves. The Smurfs Pop collection that arrived in June 2024 covered Smurfette, Vanity, Grouchy and Handy, numbers 1516 to 1519, and the 2017 Animation wave skipped him as well. The Hefty Smurf Funko that exists is Pop Asia number 209, part of a 2023 five-figure set based on the 1981 show and sold for the Asian market with a license sticker that Pops.today ties to MINDstyle. It poses Hefty in a white kung-fu jacket and black pants as a bobblehead about four inches tall, and Pops.today lists it as vaulted.

Which Hefty Smurf figure is worth the most?

No Hefty sits in the top tier of Smurf rarities. Within the group, the Blue Buddies rarity guide places the 1972 Barbell Gymnast and the 1999 Climber a notch above the 1994 tattoo Hefty, while every Hefty from 2012 onward sits at the floor. The boxed 1980 Super Smurf weightlifter is worth more complete than loose, since the barbell is the part that goes missing. One oddity to watch is the 2024 McDonald's Germany Hefty Weightlifter, a sixteenth figure available only through the German McDonald's app. Checked sold ranges go into the figure checklist on this page and follow our price method page.

Telling a real Hefty from a look-alike strongman

Three checks sort a Hefty pile. Begin with the heart: 20429, the 1999 Climber and the McDonald's and Burger King Heftys all wear it, while the 1972 Barbell Gymnast and the 1980 Super Smurf never do. Next, note what he lifts and wears: five shirt colors for the Barbell Gymnast, brown or red for the Super Smurf, a white shirt and red shorts for the 2012 Olympian, a red dumbbell for the McDonald's 2011 Hefty. Last, the date under his feet. The three newest Schleich Heftys are stamped the year before they shipped (2011, 2016 and 2018 for the 2012, 2017 and 2019 releases), so a foot date that equals the release year deserves a second look.
